We all dream of visiting all those famous cities, London, Paris, Athens, Barcelona. However, with the popularity in the rise of international traveling, it is becoming not so enjoyable task to perform, rather more a hassle to travel and even more so when traveling with family and children. Take my example, we traveled to London during the end of November and the beginning of December, to experience the Christmas markets and the holiday vibe. It was super crowded and chaotic, we tried the big red bus and since all roads were really congested, the bus was unable to complete the route. A couple of days later we arrive at Edinburgh which is not such a small city but not as big and crowded as London. It was definitely a lot calmer, cozier, slower pace experience where the locals were more approachable.
The conclusion is that rather than choosing a big City for a vacation during a high season (and this would include Christmas time in Europe), choose smaller cities, not that popular to avoid the crowds, the long lines to get into a restaurant or shops, crowded airports and other types of transportation.
Traveling should be calm and enjoyable. If you still would like to visit those big cities, it is best to choose low season, like Mid September, Early October, January-March for Europe.
