Have you ever booked a flight several months in advance to find yourself at a country with political turmoil and in a chaotic time at the place you are flying to. It is easier whenever you know the place ahead of time and know some locals. But also helps finding travel groups in social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc) and keep in contact with Airbnb host. During our family trip to Panama we were able to skip the road blocks and stay in areas that weren’t affected by the protestors.
Main highways with tolls generally were not blocked and the following areas were free of stress and protestors. Since many cancelled their plans due to all these events happening during our visit, touristic areas were pretty empty and we were able to enjoy them all to ourselves.
Casco Viejo was fully decorated for Christmas and bars, restaurants and souvenir shops were opened as usual.
Other touristics areas like the Miraflores gates for the Panama Canal were open to the public, with its souvenir shop, the IMAX theater that presents a really good documentary about the construction of the Panama Canal and a view of the Miraflores gates and how the boats are crossing it.
Other places enjoyable places with spectacular views: Isla Grande/Isla Mamey/La Guaira, this is near Portobelo, Colon on the northern part near the Atlantic Ocean. Islands like Taboga, and Contadora. Decameron, which is 1 hour and a half away from Panama City. There are great airbnbs near this area that offers access to the Golf Club, private pools, private access to the beach and restaurants.
