don’t wear high heals
It is best to walk around the cobblestone streets in Athens and the Cyclades with comfortable shoes such as sneakers or leather sandals. I found the most comfortable and airy leather sandals at a small Haris Cotton store in Santorini. (Haris Cotton is a greek made brand name). These sandals saved the rest of my trip. I wore them all day during my trips to Santorini, Naxos, and Athens without getting a single blister.
*I could not find online the sandals that I purchased at the Santorini Haris Cotton store but this one is very similar and as comfortable:
don’t throw the toilet paper into the toilet
Pipes are extremely old and smaller that the standard sewer pipes found in the USA and most countries. All public and hotel bathrooms have designated trash for this purpose.
don’t get lost
To avoid getting lost, download directions from the port or airport to your stay on your phone.
get your tours at the island
I recommend purchasing most of your tours locally on the island, you would get a better price and if you are forced to cancel the tour for an unforeseen event you could deal directly with the provider instead of using a third party.
If I would have to purchase a tour online I would use Airbnb over Viator, Trip advisor, or any random online tour group. So far I have had great experiences with Airbnb and if I ever need to cancel for missing the tour or experience I can easily request a refund.
be prepare for a transportation strike
Transportation strikes are possible while you are on a vacation. Ferries, taxis, and most modes of transportation could be canceled or postponed. Plan to request a taxi ahead of time and inquire if they could take you to your destination (airport or port) during the strike. Some stays offer transportation to and from the airport/port, at least the places that I booked offered it.
Additional tip for Santorini:
It gets really windy all day long at Santorini, be careful when using dresses, I try to wear shorts underneath.
At the end use common sense and inquire information from your host at your stay, also the US department of state for travel advisories (health, safety and political issues). Research, research, research before traveling and at the end have a safe and fun trip.
